Valentine Sugar Cookies


INGREDIENTS:

5 c Cherries; tart; red; pitted 1/3 c Sugar; brown; packed
- Canned or frozen 2 1/2 tb Cornstarch
2 1/2 tb Lemon juice 1 ts Cinnamon; ground
1/3 c Sugar; white 1/4 ts Nutmeg; ground
--TOPPING-----
1 c Flour; all purpose 1/4 ts Salt 1 tb Sugar; white 2 tb Butter or margarine 1 ts Baking powder 1/3 c Milk; to 1/2 cup

Drain cherries, reserving 1/4 cup juice; discard remaining juice. Combine cherries and lemon juice; set aside. In a saucepan, combime sugars, cornstarch, cinnamon and nutmeg; stir in reserved cherry juice. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally; boil 2 minutes. Add cherries; pour into a greased 8 inch square baking pan.

For Topping: Combine flour, sugar, baking powder and salt; cut in butter until crumbly. Stir in enough milk to moisten. Drop by tablespoonfuls over cherries. Bake at 450F for 10 to 13 minutes or until golden brown.
